Lifestyle – the way we live. An elementary, often subconscious part of our lives, yet fundamental to our health and the prevention of illness. Effective healthcare and wellness often depend on wise lifestyle choices.
As daily life evolves to fit the needs of an increasingly modern world, we tend to forget the negative effects of behavioural changes on health. The proof? Both crowded clinics and medical research confirm that chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, depression, heart disease and cancer increasingly overwhelm our healthcare system.
Lifestyle medicine is an evidence- based, interdisciplinary science that harnesses the power of human behaviour to prevent, treat and reverse lifestyle-related chronic illnesses. Stress management, physical activity, sleep, social support and nutrition and prevention of environmental exposure to harmful substances make up the core of lifestyle interventions.
Combining the strengths of clinical medicine, community and public health and everything in between, lifestyle medicine is – in short- everything we already know, but are not doing collectively enough, or creatively enough to solve the problems our behaviour has created.
